Republican National Convention
The Republican National Convention of 1876 was held in Cincinnati, Ohio. James Blaine, former Speaker of the House, was widely popular and had a large amount of support, but was known to be dishonest because of his reported involvement in a railroad scandal. The party looked to Gov. Rutherford Hayes of Ohio, a man with fewer enemies than Blaine. On the seventh ballot, Hayes was nominated and William Wheeler was chosen as his running mate.

Vice-presidential nominee
William Wheeler of New York was a former lawyer, district attorney, and congressman. The Half-Breed faction of the party nominated him as "a sensible man".

The Democratic Party met in St. Louis, Missouri. Delegates nominated Samuel Tilden, the governor of New York. Thomas Hendricks was chosen as his running mate.

Before the election, Samuel Tilden had been the governor of New York. As the governor of New York, Tilden had distinguished himself by destroying the political machine of New York City mayor William"Boss" Tweed and the Tammany Hall.

Hendricks served as a lawyer in his home state of Indiana, as well as with the U.S. Congress. He became governor of Indiana, where he became associated with agrarian reform and the Democratic movement of "soft money", paper currency not backed up with gold.
